tmobile slow T Mobile Re Words Data Capping Statement

Yesterday my partner Stephen reported that T-Mobile was going to be capping data usage if usage exceded 1GB per month.  This was outrageous and the news bit fast and within hours, the news was all over the web and critisized up and down.  T-Mobile has since retracted this statement and put in place this one;

To provide the best network experience for all of our customers we may temporarily reduce data throughput for a small fraction of customers who use a disproportionate amount of bandwidth. Your data session, plan, or service may be suspended, terminated, or restricted for significant roaming or if you use your service in a way that interferes with our network or ability to provide quality service to other users.

So now instead of flat out saying 1GB of data, it is basically up to them for who they restrict.  I guess it is good that they saw the error in their ways and “kinda” fixed the problem, however I guess we will have to wait and see who gets their data restricted and at what usage rate it gets blocked at.  Blackberry users beware of the iron fist of T-Mobile, and check your bills!!

Furthermore, we have received an official statement from T-Mobile about the “new” policy:

“Our goal, when the T-Mobile G1 becomes available in October, is to provide affordable, high-speed data service allowing customers to experience the full data capabilities of the device and our 3G network. At the same time, we have a responsibility to provide the best network experience for all of our customers so we reserve the right to temporarily reduce data throughput for a small fraction of our customers who have excessive or disproportionate usage that interferes with our network performance or our ability to provide quality service to all of our customers.

We removed the 1GB soft limit from our policy statement, and we are confident that T-Mobile G1 customers will enjoy the high speed of data access over our 3G network. The specific terms for our new data plans are still being reviewed and once they are final we will be certain to share this broadly with all customers.”

I’m glad we could help to change your mind T-Mobile.  Just email us if you need anymore advice about your policies.

P.S. I have unlimited data with my Blackberry and I have a G1 on the way, so you better believe I will be pushing their limits next month ;)

    Your partner Steve emailed me about this yesterday about the 1GB cap as T-Mobile quickly rectified it.

    My sense as here in San Diego as we just got 3G last week is that the system will get overloaded so it was a smart preemptive move by T-Mobile to set a cap, but the wording revisement was a better PR move to accomplish the same thing in an ambigious way.
