At the very end of October 2008, speculation of the Curve 8900’s release was indefinite. At the same time, some lucky people got to play with a demo version of the AT&T branded 8900, so we have known about this impending AT&T release for a long while now. Plus at CES, they had an AT&T branded 8900 too. So this news isn’t new. What is new though is that BGR got wind of some release info for the AT&T 8900 as well as the AT&T 8210 Pearl Flip. Here is the word; the Curve 8900 is scheduled for a February launch and the Pearl Flip 8210 is said to be coming in March.
I personally was not sure when this would actually happen, but it seems a lot sooner than I would have expected. We knew all along that T-Mobile would be out with the 8900 first, but we weren’t sure if they had any exclusive rights deals for a certain amount of time. Apparently not. I must say though, the only real press that the 8900 got, is blog press, which is ridiculous. T-mobile totally screwed the launch of this device, just like they did for the Pearl Flip 8220. There were no pre-launch advertisements or commercials for either of the devices. Hell, they just started promoting the Pearl Flip on TV with the butt dialing commercial. I have a theory about this; times are hard for companies in our current economic situation, so they have to pick and choose on how they advertise. Now, T-Mobile chose to spend their ad money on Dwane Wade ads for the NBA season which premiered this weekend for the All-Stars. The weird thing is, is that BlackBerries are selling pretty well with T-Mobile, and the new Curve 8900 is going to replace the Curve which is BlackBerries most popular phone. So, to not have any ads preceding the launch of what should be the new most popular phone, is very risky. This is especially risky since they probably know that AT&T will be launching the same device shortly after them. Now with AT&T, if they are expecting a February launch, they better start pushing some ads out soon or they will be in the same boat. The Bold ads have calmed, so why not push something else? I could go on, but this information post has turned into a rant.
