NTT DoCoMo Pulls Bold from Shelves Due to Overheating

blackberry bold1 NTT DoCoMo Pulls Bold from Shelves Due to Overheating

Last week Japan’s NTT DoCoMo halted sales of the BlackBerry Bold.  This was due to reports of the phone over heating.  Fortunately only 4,000 devices were sold then they pulled them from the shelves so RIM could fix the problem.  The Bold keyboard was reported to heat up while in use and while charging.  Nobody was injured due to excess heat, but overheating is not a normal occurrence for phones, so it could lead to other issues.

On a personal note, I have noticed prior to this report that my phone does get a little warm while I am on a call, but that is it.  It is fine while charging and a little warmth doesn’t worry me too much.  Hopefully RIM will identify this problem and hopefully it only affected Japan so they do not have to issue a recall.

Let me know in the comments if any other Bold owners are having issues.

"Nobody was injured due to excess heat, but overheating is not a normal occurrence for phones, so it could lead to other issues." Overheating is a normal occurrence for CDMA-based phones (google overheating CDMA). I suspect there have been other instances of overheating - Japan uses multiple incompatible TDMA/CDMA standards, including PDC, W-CDMA, cdmaOne, and CDMA2000.

I ditched USCC (CDMA) after going through 3 different phones, all of which overheated after ~15min talk time. Their tech support was laughable - "it's overheating because you're in digital mode!"

I have had multiple TMO GSM phones (grey market and direct from TMO), none of which have had this problem...

    Go figure!
  • I agree, there is no better BlackBerry than the Bold as of yet. Viva la BlackBerry Bold!

This happens to me too, all the time. Specially if I have too many apps open. I always figured it was normal, because of so many open apps, but I guess it isn't.

But anyway, I love my Bold :P no one is taking it away from me, until it dies. hehe

Long live to "HOT" Blackberries. :)

I am from Chile, South America.
