Overheating is a normal occurrence for CDMA-based phones (google overheating CDMA). I suspect there have been other instances of overheating - Japan uses multiple incompatible TDMA/CDMA standards, including PDC, W-CDMA, cdmaOne, and CDMA2000. I ditched USCC (CDMA) after going through 3 different phones, all of which overheated after ~15min talk time. Their tech support was laughable - "it's overheating because you're in digital mode!" I have had multiple TMO GSM phones (grey market and direct from TMO), none of which have had this problem... Specially if I have too many apps open. I always figured it was normal, because of so many open apps, but I guess it isn't.
