berryreporter tips5 Tip of the Day #1 3/6/09

Tip of the Day is a new section on our website that I will try to keep updated daily or at least 5 days a week.  The tips could be anything from a simple how to, to a tip on BlackBerry use, or even a more advanced how to.  Basically, it could be anything I say is a tip, however I will try and focus more on the beginner side of things and shortcuts useful stuff like that.

The Tip of the Day will go up as a normal post, there will be a link at the top of the page (coming soon), and a link on the side. Make sure you check it everyday because there could be a cool interesting tip that you didn’t know about.

So, Tip of the Day #1 is for all you new BlackBerry Curve 8900 and Bold users.  Sorry all the rest of you, I’ll get something good for you soon ;) .

Tip: How to switch your profile to vibrate with one button shortcut – press and hold Q to quickly change your profile to Vibrate.  Press and hold it again and it will go back to the profile you previous had set.  You can do this on the home screen, the home menu, and your message list.  (this shortcut will not work on 3rd party apps or anywhere you can type.)

I know this is hardly a worthy tip, but it is sooo useful.  It saves the hassle of always going into your profiles and scrolling up and down through the different profiles.  When I go into meetings or class, just hit Q and boom done.  When I’m finished, Q and I’m back to normal.

More tips to come!

About the Author:

  • Whoa... I'm using 4.6.1.114 on the 8900 and it just makes my phone vibrate non-stop. I had to do a battery pull.
  • Awesome! I guess that answers that question.
  • It shouldn't let you assign a number to Q. You shouldn't be able to edit Q either.

Yes it works on the 8350i, just tried it ... very cool.

What if you have a speed dial assigned to that button? Is this something that you just have to make sure you do not assign a speed dial to be able to use this function?
  • I can dial from my homescreen and still use this shortcut. You just have to hold it for like 2 seconds. It doesn't work on pre OS 4.6 models. The 8350i, I'm not sure about though.

NICE! If only I had a Bold or an 8900...I'll keep this in mind for when I get one.

I like these daily tips, keep'em coming. ;)

I'm pretty sure you need to have "Dial from home screen" set to "No" for this or any keyboard shortcut to work.
