BlackBerry themes took a huge step forward in 2009. They have become an important part of the BlackBerry experience and some would argue they are now more popular then everyday applications. RIM is starting to realize how vital these themes are and not too long ago they decided to add them to the catalog at BlackBerry App World. They also released a new version of BlackBerry Theme Studio which makes it easier than ever to jump in and start creating custom themes.
Let’s face it preloaded themes provided by carriers just don’t cut it anymore. Even though they are getting better they really can’t compare to the custom made BlackBerry theme. There are so many different talented BlackBerry theme developers emerging in the community and because of this we now have a wide array of themes to choose from. This year we saw plenty of high quality BlackBerry themes so it was extremely hard to narrow down our top 5. We looked at user reviews, overall style, features and functions to come up with the best BlackBerry themes of 2009.
5. Rollin by Hedone Design ($6.99)
You can always count on Hedone Design to make a high quality BlackBerry theme and that is exactly what Rollin is. This theme is all about the retro styled graphics and vibrant colors that come bursting out of the homescreen. It’s not often that you get a BlackBerry theme with this much artistic flavor. Rollin is certainly one of kind and although it doesn’t have a ton of custom features the amazing layout more than makes up for it.
2009 was a big year for Elecite as they released some incredible BlackBerry themes. One theme stood out from all the rest and it was Archaic. All you have to do is take one look at Archaic and you can see why it made our list. The clean looking design and custom icons are exceptional. Archaic has the ability to slide between different pages so you can quickly get to your calendar, messages and media. Perhaps the greatest feature of Archaic is speed, you don’t have to worry about any lag when you’re scrolling through this theme.
3. Transitions by Zman Designs ($2.99)
When Zman Designs released the Transitions theme it became an instant hit. Not only does it offer a unique design and style but it’s also available for a low price. Transitions comes with some never before seen functions that make it much more than a theme. It breaks your homescreen down into four different categories apps, messaging, media and settings. The apps section can be customized by the user and each category gives you quick access to your most used functions. When was the last time you saw a theme this good for only $2.99?
BBamped is a special BlackBerry theme and it almost grabbed our #1 spot. The fact that you can get it for free is amazing because it has all the looks and features of a premium theme. BBamped comes in 6 different colors and each one looks spectacular It also has a hidden today feature for your calendar, messages, and SMS. There are two OCD icon slots which are ideal for placing your weather app or any other app that you use the most. BBamped is just an overall well made theme and if you own a Tour or a Storm you need to have this on your BlackBerry.
1. BeDroid by JMal Designs ($6.99)
The Droid may not be on par with the BlackBerry but it comes with an extremely attractive UI. JMal Designs created a theme that gives you the style of the Droid with the functions of a BlackBerry. BeDroid not only looks good it is also packed with some great features. It comes with a unique custom icon set, animations, up to 8 user defined icons on the homescreen and best of all it looks stunning. BeDroid is also equipped with a custom made About plugin. When you click or touch this area of the screen you instantly get battery details, memory information and even a temperature. The combination of unique features and impressive design put BeDroid #1 on our list.
