Major BlackBerry Outage in Effect

outage notification name tag 300x228 Major BlackBerry Outage in EffectSadly BlackBerry outages are becoming a common occurrence these days.  This afternoon our tip box was overloaded with users who wanted to know why their BlackBerry Messenger wasn’t working.  Then we received more tips that BlackBerry e-mail was down and this outage was also affecting web browsing so we knew something was wrong.

Further investigation indicated that other services were not working like many popular third party apps that need Internet access.  Oddly enough a new BlackBerry Messenger (5.0.0.57) was released during the downtime.  This is what happened during the last outage which was only a week ago.  In fact this is the third major BIS outage we had this month but this is certainly the biggest.

At this time the BlackBerry outage seems to still be in effect which means BIS has been down for over 4 hours now.  We don’t exactly know what is causing these problems but expect RIM to release some kind of statement, especially after this one.

UPDATE:  Looks like RIM has confirmed that there is an outage.  As of 2:00 AM EST the outage is still in effect.

From Cnet:

“Technical teams are actively working to resolve the issue for those impacted. RIM apologizes for any inconvenience experienced by customers,” read an e-mailed statement from company spokesperson Jamie Ernst. Ernst declined to elaborate, however, on the cause or extent of the outage, and offered no estimated time of repair.

@BerryReporter FYI when you include phrases like "4 hours" in your blog posts (http://bit.ly/8IfBvG) it is confusing without a timestamp.

It isn't Roger's fault for the outage, it is RIM's it not right to ask Rogers for a discount.

Noticed email and internet failure at 9:30pm EST, Dec 22; UMA still worked (probably becuase it used the carrier, T-Mobile. Email recovered at 3:14 AM, Dec 23. Why does RIM set these phones up with a single point of failure, i.e. all internet routing goes through corporate headqtrs (phone home)? Not a good design concept. Are iPhones designed similarly, all internet routing goes through a single router at Apple?

This is why you don't use a piece of equipment that unneccesarily relies upon 3rd party servers for everything. If your cell network is up, your phone (and all of its services) should be as well. Blackberry? No, Thanks.

Well today is Dec 29, 2009 and I cannot get into my message icon(s) what so ever! I am not sure if this is related to the outage or not? Is there still an outage? UGH! Frustrated!

  31. Jessica says:

I just came online to see if there was another outage because nothing is working for the last hour. Am I not alone?

  32. Indra says:

Today is 12/29/09 and i see there is a problem, i cannot activate users on BES.Email delays. Please update guys if you know about outage.

  33. Justin says:

Interesting I haven't heard of any outages on the BIS this could be just related to BES. I will investigate.

  34. trueblue72 says:

Jessica, yes there is quite the outage still going on! I still cannot access my message/email icons! I can, however, access my blackberry messenger and yahoo messenger as well as my internet. Funny all this occured about Dec 22 and the fact that I am the only persob on my wireless plan that is having this issue. The other 2 people on my plan also have blackberry AND we all have the same models of blackberry. Hell, my mms hasn't worked for like 2 months now either. I think when it comes time to upgrade I'm going to strongly consider a different smart phone or go back to just a basic phone that doesn't have all these issues! Thanks blackberry!

(this is trueblue7 again) I wold like to add that I do not have an enterprise account that I am strictly BIS.

  36. trueblue72 says:

  37. trueblue72 says:

Last week I had my messaging icons working for 4 hours! Therefore, I took it upon myself to wrtie down ALL my contacts (since my device will NOT connect to any computer utilizing desktop manager) and just wiped it clean and started fresh. NOW all is working! Sheesh! Thinking maybe it was my device possibly?

  38. BBAddict says:

I got a BlackBerry, had I known the applications and other features of the phone were poorly programmed I would not have gotten it. Especially after these outages… this is rather ridiculous…
At this current instant I am suffering some kind of outage… I am paying for this to have a 24/7 reliability… why does it not have that… This is also the second BB I have had with-in a year. The first one started rebooting at random points during the day… I'd get a call, try to answer …. bam! white screen of death
