Some users may want a more specific reading of their signal strength, as 5 bars isn’t exactly precise. This is actually possible – by entering a simple keyboard shortcut from your home screen, you can toggle between the standard signal reading and the numerical dBm reading.
Note that the lower the number, the better your signal strength, since the numerical value actually represents how much power your phone is outputting in order to remain connected. A dBm reading of about 100 would translate into one or two bars, while a dBm reading of roughly 75 or better would be five bars.
To toggle the type of signal strength reading in your status bar, hold down the ALT key and press (in order) N, M, L, L.
Update: Apparently this is possible only on certain BlackBerry Storm OS versions, but does work for many users. To change the signal meter reading to dBm on your Storm, put your device in landscape mode, hold down the 123 key for Num Lock, and press the ! , ” ” keys.
