I’m not sure how long this version of Nobex Radio Companion has been out, but Nobex the winner of the BlackBerry Cool 15 has upgraded their Radio Companion to v22.214.171.124. I was tipped off about the update by BlackBerryRocks, so I thought I should download it and give it a run through. Now be aware that it is a program still in development, so it isn’t as pretty as say Viigo.
So for those who were too busy during the BlackBerry Developers conference to notice what the winners of the BBC 15 were all about, Nobex Radio Companion is a BlackBerry application that lets you stream radio stations. As of right now, it is still in development and radio stations are still being added and updated. For most stations on the radio, you cannot stream them at the moment, but it will show you a timeline of what has been aired on the station starting when you open the program. After a certain amount of time it will cut off the list starting from the beginning.
This program is very useful however because if you are listening to a song on the radio and you want to know what it is, who sings it, lyrics of the song, or just want to download the song, Nobex Radio Companion is what you are looking for. For any song on that is displayed on a channel, it gives you the option to get the song. By get it, it means that the song details will be emailed to you where it gives you instructions on where to download it. In the future you will be able to download songs directly from Nobex, but not as of yet.
As I stated before, this application is still being developed. Many stations have not been added to the channel listings and most you cannot stream yet. However, when streaming this program is terrific, I have always wanted a good device to listen to the radio with besides my car stereo. The beauty of this app compared to something like the iPod is that it does not use radio frequencies, instead it uses WiFi or your data connection. While this uses the internet to stream, the station will have a short time delay about 30 seconds to the real time broadcasts, which is not really a big deal unless you are trying to win a radio contest.
Now on to some fun news for BlackBerry users. So not only can you download this great application for free, radio streaming is free for the time being! There will be a subscription in the future, probably when the it is fully developed. If you really love this type of application, you probably won’t mind paying for it. I can’t see it being for than a few bucks a month, but we’ll see. That’s it, until the next updated version.
