BlackBerry Announces Upcoming Changes for BlackBerry 10 and BBOS BBM Users

If you’re a BBM user on a BlackBerry OS or BlackBerry 10 device, there are some big changes coming that you might not like .

Recently BBM users on iOS and Android have been seeing some great changes to the overall experience of BBM . Folks on BlackBerry 10 and BBOS have been feeling kind of left out . We know that’s BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 support is coming to a close soon and it looks BBM is starting to see the impact.

Starting on June 27th BBM consumer features will no longer work .  Also support for BBM on Windows devices will stop receiving support .

What features are they talking about though? It seems like most of it is regarding BBM Groups, BBM channels and purchasing stickers in BBM.

Upcoming changes to BBM Consumer for BB10 and BBOS devices:

  • BBM Channels will no longer be available on BB10 and BBOS devices
  • BBM Groups will no longer support groups with a combination of BB10 / BBOS participants and Android / iOS participants
    • BBM Groups will continue to support groups with only BB10 and BBOS participants, or groups with only Android and iOS participants
  • As part of our winddown of BlackBerry World, the BBM Shop will no longer offer paid sticker packs or subscriptions on BB10 and BBOS devices though free content will continue to be available
  • Display pictures will not be visible between BB10 / BBOS users and Android / iOS users

BBM users on BlackBerry 10 and BBOS will still be able to send 1:1 chats with BBM consumer users on iOS and Android .

While this is sad news for those on BlackBerry 10 and BBOS, it’s something we knew was coming . With BlackBerry getting ready to end support for BlackBerry 10 and BBOS, it was only a matter of time before BBM was effected.

If you still want to continue using BBM and you are on BlackBerry 10 or BBOS you might want to look into upgrading to a shiny new BlackBerry KEY2 and switching to BBM for android!
