BlackBerry ‘Athena’ Renders Emerge Online

We know that BlackBerry Mobile is planning on launching brand new devices this year. They have come out and publically stated that they would be releasing two new devices this year. We also know that one of those two devices will be the follow up to the BlackBerry KEYone. With it being already April, I have been pretty amazed that we have yet to hear anything about the device. BlackBerry Mobile has been pretty quiet concerning the follow up to the BlackBerry KEYone, and there hasn’t been any leaked information about it either.

The folks over at SlashLeaks have now posted a render of a rumored BlackBerry device with the code name Athena. Now, the code name Athena has been a name I have been hearing in the rumor mill but nothing has been attached to that name, it has simply been a name floating around the internet. The rendered photos shows what looks to be an updated version of the BlackBerry KEYone and the device looks pretty nice with some great looking changes.

The first thing that stands out to me is the Keyboard of the device. The keyboard of the device looks a bit wider and actually looks like a mix of the BlackBerry Classic and the BlackBerry PRIV keyboard. The Space Bar button is displaying the BlackBerry logo, which is similar to the BlackBerry Motion home button that also displays the Logo. The render also shows that the Power, volume and the Convince key button have moved to the right handed side, similar to how they are on the BlackBerry Motion. The top portion of the display also looks to have been reduced as there is no more silver bar that houses the Front facing camera and the ear piece. One of the biggest changes shown in the render is the rear camera that is support a dual camera lens, similar to what we have been seeing with other Android devices and even on the iPhone. If you remember a month or so ago, we saw BlackBerry Mobile and BlackBerry submit a patent for a new camera technology, and this could be them using this patent.

While the rendered pictures look great and are fun to look at, we have to keep in mind that this is just a render and might not be anywhere close to what the next BlackBerry Keyboard will look like. We have not seen any photos of this device proving that this render is accurate. Hopefully, we will start seeing more information become available soon and hear something officially from TCL/BlackBerry Mobile. Stay Tuned!
