BlackBerry CEO John Chen Wants Someone to build a BlackBerry Bold 9900 Type Device Someday

Recently, there has a been big trend in the tech world and it all revolves around the past, called Nostalgia. Just look at what Nintendo has done with releasing the Nintendo NES Classic, the Nintendo Super NES Classic, and look at what Nokia is doing with some of their popular phones from the past.  There are many BlackBerry users who still love their ‘older’ devices and would love to see devices like them become popular again.  One BlackBerry user is really hoping this happens, BlackBerry CEO John Chen.

In an interview with ReCode Podcast, hosted by Kara Swisher, BlackBerry CEO John Chen stated that he wishes that someone, not BlackBerry, would build a simple device that just focuses on secure email, secure texts, and a basic browser.

“For the foreseeable future, I think our strategy works really well. But I think there might be a need in this world for a phone that is very simple and just focused on secure email, secure texts, and a basic browser.”

John Chen stated that he would love to bring back a device like the BlackBerry Bold 9900, a device that fits in the palm of your hand. He imaged a device like this would cost around $150 to $199. The device would be simple but secure.

“Regulated industries like doctors and lawyers and people who make deals — for example, investment bankers — and government employees, I think they would love that. You don’t make it too fancy, and you don’t make it too expensive, either.”

Now, given BlackBerry’s current strategy, we wouldn’t see this anytime soon, but it is something that probably could happen. During the interview, Chen was asked if he would ever see BlackBerry getting back to making phones in-house, and he stated that is something he wouldn’t rule out.  We have heard John Chen state this before in the past.  BlackBerry could eventually build up the BlackBerry Brand high enough to the point where making phones would be profitable for BlackBerry again.

As for what OS this dream device of John Chen would be running, he didn’t state that, but I doubt it would be running Android.   A device that is focused on secure email, secure text, and a basic browser spells out BlackBerry 10.  If you take away the lack of apps on BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry 10 was a great OS and one of the most impressive OS’s to this day.  These basic features of BlackBerry 10 could be built on any type of device and I think would be more of the selling factor to a hardware manufacturer.

Again, this is might be John Chen stating his fantasy but the fact that he is thinking of things like BlackBerry 10 and the Bold 9900 is a good sign for fans of the past.  Check out the podcast below as it has some really interesting stuff in it from John Chen.
