BlackBerry Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Snap Inc.

A few weeks ago, news broke that BlackBerry had filed a Patent Infringement lawsuit against Facebook. If you watched the UTB Blogcast that I was a part of or listened to the Berry Report Podcast from that week, you might remember me and others were wondering if BlackBerry would start to go after other messaging companies. My thought was that BlackBerry would wait to see how the outcome of the Facebook Lawsuit would go. However, it looks like BlackBerry is wasting little time.

BlackBerry today has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Snap Inc, the company of Snapchat. The patents in question are listed below.

  • 8,209,634 – Previewing a new event on a small screen device
  • 8,301,713 – Handheld electronic device and associated method providing time data in a messaging environment
  • 7,970,849 – Handheld electronic device and associated method providing time data in a messaging environment
  • 8,825,084 – System and method for determining action spot locations relative to the location of a mobile device
  • 8,326,327 – System and method for determining action spot locations relative to the location of a mobile device
  • 8,296,351 – System and method for pushing information to a mobile device
  • 8,676,929 – System and method for pushing information to a mobile device

The patents in question for the lawsuit against Snap Inc. are the same ones that are in question in the lawsuit against Facebook.  BlackBerry also mentions that Snap Inc. used BlackBerry’s Patents to drive customers away from BBM and pushed them to Snapchat.  What is interesting about this lawsuit is that it mentions that Snap Inc. was informed via “Notice of Infringement” and invited to discuss it before the lawsuit was filed.  You can check out the full lawsuit below. We will see where this all goes!
