BlackBerry Mobile Officially Announces the BlackBerry KEY2 LE

For awhile now, we have been hearing of a rumored device coming from BlackBerry Mobile. This rumored device was rumored to be a slightly less featured pack version of the BlackBerry KEY2. Well today at IFA 2018 in Berlin, BlackBerry Mobile has made that rumor official!

BlackBerry Mobile has officially announced the BlackBerry KEY2 LE!

The BlackBerry KEY2 LE is being labeled as ‘An Icon for All’ and the slogan fits the device very well. The BlackBerry KEY2 LE is an entry level version of the BlackBerry KEY2 with some slight variation to the hardware of the device. Instead of having the Series 7 Aluminum frame like the BlackBerry KEY2, the BlackBerry KEY2 LE features a lightweight poly-carbonate design. It also has a newly designed soft textured back which should provide for better in-hand grip to help avoid drops. The BlackBerry KEY2 LE also has a different processor than the BlackBerry KEY2 does, using the Qualcomm 636 Processor instead of the 660 which is found on the KEY2.

There is another hardware change that might not make some folks happy and that is the elimination of the touch-enabled Keyboard. Now the BlackBerry KEY2 LE has the same 35 Key Physical keyboard that the BlackBerry KEY2 has but there is no capacitive features on it, which eliminates the ability to scroll through a web pack with the keyboard. Kind of a bummer for folks who love this feature like myself. The BlackBerry KEY2 LE also features a different camera setup than on the BlackBerry KEY2. There is still a dual camera on the back but BlackBerry Mobile decided to go with a 13MP and 5MP camera instead of the 12MP+12MP lenses that are available on the BlackBerry KEY2. The BlackBerry KEY2 LE will also have 4GB of RAM, which should be fine considering it is the same amount that was in the BlackBerry Motion.

Probably my favorite thing about the BlackBerry KEY2 LE that is different than the BlackBerry KEY2, is that it comes in three different colors! You can choose Atomic, Champagne, and Slate. This is the first time we have seen multi-colored devices from BlackBerry Mobile and its the first time we have see it on BlackBerry devices in awhile. This really brings me back to the old BlackBerry Curve days! I love it!

“The BlackBerry KEY2 LE brings a fresh new personality to TCL Communication’s BlackBerry KEY2 portfolio that includes all the security features that make BlackBerry phones the world’s most secure Android™ smartphones,” said Alex Thurber, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobility Solutions at BlackBerry. “With this new addition to their product lineup, the KEY2 LE keeps the iconic BlackBerry styling while offering an accessible entry point for our fans around the world to enjoy a modern BlackBerry smartphone.”

The BlackBerry KEY2 LE comes in two storage variants, 32GB and 64GB, and will be available globally including in Germany, the U.K., France, Canada, and the US. The device will become available starting next month and will retail for $399 USD / €399 EUR / £349 GBP / $519 CAD for the 32GB storage variant and $449 USD / €429 EUR / £399 GBP / $579CAD for the 64GB storage variant.
