Facebook Files a Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against BlackBerry

Back in March BlackBerry filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Facebook. The lawsuit was for Facebook using BlackBerry patents in WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram. Well it looks like Facebook didn’t really like that. Facebook today has announced that they have filed a patent infrigment lawsuit against BlackBerry!

In this 118 page lawsuit, Facebook is accusing BlackBerry of using patented voice messaging technology that Facebook using in Facebook Messenger. Facebook is also caliming that BlackBerry used patented technology that improves how a mobile device delivers graphics, videos, and audio. They also included a patent that centralizes tracking and analysing of GPS data. While I havn’t fully digged into the entire lawsuit, one of patents in question is the ability to make a Facebook messenger voice call right from the chat window using the phone icon to start the call. If you remember back to BlackBerry 10 BBM this was feature that was already implimented with BBM Voice. Facebook Messenger didn’t roll out the calling feature till slightly after BlackBerry 10 was launched.

I will read through the patent and we will have more on this later on. If you would like to check out the patent for yourself, feel free to click on the link below.
